Fasteners and the complete tool setup
| Fastener | Tools to consider | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Drive recess in a screw head, working by hand | Screwdrivers selected by exact profile, size, length and handle clearance | A similar profile increases the risk of a poor fit. |
| Drive recess used with a holder or power tool | Bit plus holder or drive fitting as a complete setup | The correct profile is not enough if the bit length or holder cannot reach the fastener. |
| External nut or bolt head | Spanners or sockets selected by size and access | Side access and access from above call for different tool designs. |
Example: a furniture fitting next to a side panel
First identify the drive profile or spanner size. If the recess sits deep inside a hole, a short bit may be unsuitable despite having the right shape; compare the length and holder together. For a nut close to a panel, you also need to determine whether a spanner can be fitted from the side or a socket from above.
