Work gloves with cotton

For gloves containing cotton, first consider its role: is the cotton fabric on the outside, used as a coating liner or worn as an inner layer? This determines which other construction details you need to compare for the task. The fibre content alone does not describe protective performance.

Outer and inner layers serve different purposes

Cotton as … What this means for your choice
uncoated outer fabric Consider it only for a suitable dry task. Plain fabric does not provide a liquid barrier against water, oil or grease.
a liner beneath a coating Also check the outer coating and its coverage. “Contains cotton” alone does not explain which types of contact with workpieces the model is suitable for.
a separate liner glove The inner layer can absorb sweat; it does not replace the outer protective layer. Check the fit of the complete combination.
part of a material blend or a fixed lining The full material and care information matters. A cotton content does not make a glove pure cotton.

Example: dry sorting or wet wiping

When sorting clean, dry parts with no special protection requirements, an uncoated glove intended for the task may be an option. As soon as you wipe the parts with liquid and need to protect your hand from it, plain uncoated fabric is ruled out as a liquid barrier. You then need a suitable outer protective construction with information about the substance being used. A higher cotton content does not address this change in task.

Try the liner on together with the outer glove

If you want to wear cotton on the inside, try on the combination before working. If the outer glove becomes tight or finger movement is too restricted, the combination is unsuitable. Compare suitable combinations according to the manufacturer's guidance; a second layer must not impair the intended function of the outer glove. Follow the care and replacement instructions for the specific version.

For sensitive surfaces or specialised work areas, you may also need explicit information on properties such as lint shedding or electrostatic behaviour. Cotton alone provides no evidence of these.
