Safety glasses & face shields

Safety glasses, goggles that enclose the eye area and face shields cover different areas. Choose first according to the hazard, such as flying particles, liquids or optical radiation, then consider fit and compatibility with other equipment. A large lens alone does not establish suitability for all these tasks.

Match the design to the protection required

Situation How to choose When to rule it out
Eye protection against mechanical hazards Compare suitable safety glasses or goggles by the required coverage and stated impact resistance. Ordinary prescription glasses are not a substitute for designated eye protection.
Dust or liquid can reach the eye area Choose goggles rated for that purpose or the prescribed combination. Do not treat a design with open sides as sealed simply because it has large lenses.
The face is also at risk Plan a suitable face shield together with any eye protection required underneath. Do not confuse facial coverage with approval for any chemical or type of radiation.

Putting this into practice

Example: the work instructions for a cleaning step require splash goggles. You wear prescription glasses. An arbitrary face shield that fits over them is not a substitute: you need a suitable design that provides the required seal around the eye area and clear vision. For regular use, include prescription safety eyewear in your comparison.

Read the markings alongside the stated edition of the standard. EN 166 and EN ISO 16321 use some different symbols and tests; letters are not universally interchangeable. Helmet, eyewear and hearing protection must fit together without interfering with protective coverage or sealing surfaces.
