Screwdriver bits

A screwdriver bit must fit both the screw and the holder being used. First identify the drive profile and size at the fixing, then check the bit fitting, length and available access.

Four specifications for every bit

Specification Decision Avoid mistakes
Profile Identify the exact PH, PZ, TORX, hex socket or other profile Do not treat similar cross or star shapes as interchangeable
Size Choose the size number required by the screw head Do not use the correct profile in the wrong size
Fitting Match the shank and holder according to their documented connection Do not assume that a similar appearance guarantees a secure fit
Length Choose a standard or longer version according to access Do not confuse extra length with the ability to drive larger screws

Example: three known furniture fittings

Sort the screws by profile and size and write down each combination. If you only need PZ2 and two TORX sizes, a small matching set covers the task better than a large set without the required sizes. If a screw is deeply recessed, also check whether the holder and bit together can reach it.

Bit or fixed-blade screwdriver?

Bits are useful when you already have a suitable holder or need to change profiles. For a single fixing used repeatedly, a fixed-blade screwdriver may offer more direct access. Related categories: Screwdriving tools.
