High-visibility jackets

Assess a high-visibility jacket in the configuration you intend to use: fastened, with the planned clothing underneath and, where applicable, as a multi-part garment. Visibility and rain protection are different functions. The name high-visibility jacket alone does not establish rain protection.

The planned configuration determines your choice

Use What to distinguish Effect on your purchase
Cool working day Room for the layer you actually need underneath Try the jacket on with this layer; a cut that cannot be fastened is unsuitable.
Working in rain Evidence of high-visibility performance and separate evidence of rain protection A jacket described only in terms of visibility does not automatically meet the additional rain protection requirement.
Model with removable sleeves The jacket and sleeveless configurations may have different classifications. Plan both configurations you will use according to their markings.

Putting this into practice

Example: your chosen jacket achieves the required class with its sleeves attached. You want to wear it sleeveless in summer. Do not assume the same class applies in this configuration: removing the sleeves may result in a lower visibility class. If the necessary evidence is missing, keep the sleeves attached or plan another documented combination.

Select rain protection according to the standard and performance rating stated for that function, not the visibility class number. Also check that the jacket stays fastened when reaching and bending, and that other required PPE can be worn without obstruction.

Check the jacket as you will actually wear it

A high-visibility jacket must fit fastened over the planned layers without the required areas being covered. The guide High-visibility clothing at dusk and in darkness helps you compare winter, rainwear and lighter clothing combinations.
