A round through-hole, a blind hole and a large opening are different drilling tasks. Note the material, required diameter, drilling depth and your machine's tool holder. This helps you choose the tool type first, then the individual size.

Result Where to start When to rule it out
A hole of a specified diameter Compare drill bits by material, diameter, usable length and machine fitting A compatible fitting is not enough if the bit is unsuitable for the material or required depth.
Large round opening Check a hole saw specified for the material and opening size; add mounting, centring or guide components only if the particular version requires them If a connecting component required by the manufacturer is missing, the combination is incomplete.
Adding to existing drilling tools Check holders, adapters or guides at both connection points An adapter does not resolve an unverified connection at the cutting tool.

Example: an opening for a cable feed-through

Measure the required opening diameter and material thickness. For a larger round opening, the comparison leads to a hole saw rather than a set of small twist drill bits. Then check the chosen hole saw against your existing machine and add only the mounting, centring or guide components required by its manufacturer's documentation. This avoids assuming that a pilot drill is always needed or overlooking an essential system component.

For individual drill bits, go to Drill bits; find additional components under Drilling accessories and attachments.
