Read test classes correctly
| Marking under EN ISO 17249 | Chain speed used in testing | What it means for your comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | 20 m/s | First test class; not a general approval for every saw with this speed rating. |
| Class 2 | 24 m/s | Different test conditions; choose according to the requirements of the intended work. |
| Class 3 | 28 m/s | Higher test speed, but still not complete protection against every cutting situation. |
Turn the information into a choice
Example: the equipment specification for the planned work requires Class 2. A well-fitting Class 1 boot is therefore ruled out. Among the appropriately marked versions, compare heel support and room to move while wearing your work socks, as well as the fit with your intended trousers. A higher class does not make a poorly fitting boot suitable.
The test represents defined laboratory conditions. Actual cutting behaviour also depends on factors including the drive system, chain, contact angle and force; the speed figure is therefore not a guarantee of protection. Any missing information about the saw or required protection level must be clarified before selection. Never test protection by attempting to cut a boot while wearing it.
