High-visibility clothing

Plan High-visibility clothing around the combination you will actually wear at work. Start with the visibility class specified for the task. Then decide which garments will remain visible as outer layers in hot, rainy and cool weather, and which you will take off during the day.

From the task to the clothing combination

Planning question Key distinction Next step
Which visibility class is required? EN ISO 20471 distinguishes three classes based on visible material areas and design. Use the marking on the specific version as your reference.
Will the upper garment stay on throughout the job? Removing it changes the visible combination. Also plan for the remaining outfit, such as a shirt with trousers rather than just a jacket.
Should two garments meet the requirement together? Classes cannot simply be added together. Select a combination documented for this purpose in the required sizes.

Putting this into practice

Example: you wear a jacket in the morning but only a shirt at midday. Do not buy the jacket first and treat the shirt as an arbitrary extra. Compare both outfits and select the individual garments so that the required visibility is maintained after the change. If there is no supporting documentation for the lighter outfit, your equipment planning is not yet complete.

Fluorescent material helps you stand out in daylight; retroreflective material reflects incoming light back towards its source. High-visibility clothing does not provide active lighting or guarantee that you will be seen in every situation. Additional protection against rain, cold or other hazards requires separate evidence.

Planning high-visibility clothing for the darker months

Consider every outfit you will actually wear, including winter layers or additional rainwear. The guide High-visibility clothing at dusk and in darkness explains how to check the requirements, visible combination, garment condition and replacement needs separately.
