Flower pots & planters

When choosing planters, the plants' needs and the available space must match. Compare external dimensions, usable internal space and the specific insert or drainage arrangement before choosing by colour and shape.

How to narrow down your options

  1. Measure the space: Note the width, depth and maximum height. For a balcony planter, also consider the railing profile and the space needed for brackets.
  2. Define the planting space: Compare usable internal dimensions and planting volume with the intended root ball. External dimensions, growing medium volume and water reservoir capacity are different specifications.
  3. Plan the water flow: Decide where excess water should collect or drain and how you will check the water level. Uncontrolled drainage indoors has different implications from drainage onto a suitable outdoor surface.
  4. Consider setup and transport: An insert can change how you arrange the planting compared with a container filled throughout. Allow for the weight after planting and watering.

Choose planter shapes to suit the location

Option When should you take a closer look? Key comparison
Individual pot For a single plant or a freely arranged group Compare the footprint and usable depth with the root ball.
Long planter box For several plants along a windowsill or balcony Plan the overall length, plant spacing and any brackets together.
Planter with an insert When the planting space and outer container are separate Compare the insert's dimensions and volume, rather than only the decorative outer shell.
Planter with a reservoir When a built-in water supply is wanted Consider reservoir capacity, filling and water-level monitoring separately from planting volume.

Frequently asked questions before buying

Why might a tall pot have a small planting volume?

An insert or reservoir may occupy part of the overall space. Compare the stated planting volume and usable depth. A tall decorative outer shape does not automatically mean more room for roots.

How long will a water reservoir last?

Volume alone cannot tell you a fixed number of days. Plants, location and weather affect water demand. Choose a design that makes it easy to monitor the level and refill during everyday use.

Will every balcony planter fit every railing?

No. Compare the railing profile, brackets and intended mounting method. Allow for the fully planted and watered setup, not just the empty container; without suitable fixings, external length alone is not a basis for buying.
