Look at the fastener first: does it have a screw head with a drive recess, or an external shape for a spanner or socket? The drive profile or spanner size and the available access determine which tools to consider.

Fasteners and the complete tool setup

Fastener Tools to consider Limitation
Drive recess in a screw head, working by hand Screwdrivers selected by exact profile, size, length and handle clearance A similar profile increases the risk of a poor fit.
Drive recess used with a holder or power tool Bit plus holder or drive fitting as a complete setup The correct profile is not enough if the bit length or holder cannot reach the fastener.
External nut or bolt head Spanners or sockets selected by size and access Side access and access from above call for different tool designs.

Example: a furniture fitting next to a side panel

First identify the drive profile or spanner size. If the recess sits deep inside a hole, a short bit may be unsuitable despite having the right shape; compare the length and holder together. For a nut close to a panel, you also need to determine whether a spanner can be fitted from the side or a socket from above.
