Plan the pipe layout before listing materials
Draw the source, main line, branches, valves and endpoints to scale or with lengths marked. Mark changes in elevation, paths, roots and points that must remain accessible later. Every bend, branch and restriction affects the system. For long or heavily branched runs, pipe sizing should be professionally calculated based on the required flow and permissible pressure losses.
| Planning area | What to document | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe | External and internal dimensions specified for the system, material, permissible operating range | Connectors and hydraulic calculations rely on defined dimensions |
| Connections | System, insertion depth, seal, assembly instructions | Similar diameters are not automatically compatible |
| Route | Length, elevation, bends and branches | Determines pressure loss and material requirements |
| Maintenance | Isolation, drainage, flushing and testing points | Makes commissioning and seasonal maintenance easier |
Do not equate pipe dimensions with thread sizes
Depending on the type of pipe system, the stated dimension may refer to the external or internal diameter. Threads follow their own standards and naming conventions. Always take dimensions from the system specifications for the exact pipe and connector. Mixed installations require explicitly compatible adapters; “almost the same” does not provide a reliable fit for sealing surfaces and push-fit connections.
Before backfilling the trench
- Clean and prepare pipe ends as instructed
- Fully assemble connections and flush the line
- Check the section for leaks under the intended operating conditions
- Keep valves, filters and detachable adapters accessible
- Photograph the pipe route and record dimensions for future work
- Implement frost protection and drainage measures according to the manufacturer's instructions and system requirements
