Pliers, clamps & clamping tools

Gripping and clamping differ in how long and where holding force is applied. Pliers are operated by hand; a clamp holds components at chosen points; a vice provides a fixed clamping position for repeated use.

How should the workpiece be held?

Task What to choose What to measure
Briefly grip, guide or position a part Pliers selected by jaw shape, opening capacity and access Workpiece shape plus clear space around the gripping point
Hold two components together during a work step A clamp selected by clamping capacity and throat depth Overall dimensions and distance from the clamping point to the edge
Repeatedly hold a workpiece in a fixed position A vice selected by jaw opening, mounting method and clear working area Workpiece dimensions, mounting surface and required access

Example: joining two strips and then working on them

During joining, both strips need to stay together along their length: compare clamps and establish several clamping points. For later work on a single end, a fixed vice may be suitable if the mounting surface and jaw opening are sufficient. Basic hand-operated gripping pliers without a self-locking mechanism are unsuitable as a continuous holding device here, because they would have to be held throughout the work.

Assess delicate surfaces and permissible clamping forces using the workpiece and the specific tool specifications; a tool category does not imply universal suitability.
