Cold-resistant gloves

Cold air and handling cold objects affect the hand differently. EN 511 addresses these aspects separately. A warm lining or the name “winter glove” therefore does not replace deciding which cold test matters for your task.

What the cold ratings mean

  • Convective cold describes thermal insulation against cold surroundings. It is measured using a heated hand model.
  • Contact cold describes thermal resistance during direct contact. This test uses a different setup, and its result cannot be inferred from the convective cold result.
  • Water penetration is assessed separately. A good cold rating alone does not confirm that the glove stays dry during wet contact.

Selection example

You regularly hold cold metal parts and are comparing two well-fitting models. A good convective cold rating does not yet answer the question of direct contact. Use the documented contact cold rating for the required task. If wet parts are also involved, you will need appropriate evidence of protection against moisture and a suitable construction.

The test ratings establish neither a general minimum outdoor temperature nor a permitted wearing time. Exposure, activity and duration of use remain part of the selection process. For lining, finger movement and practical fit, see the related winter glove comparison.
