Pliers

Pliers should suit the specific action: gripping, holding, bending or cutting. Establish the workpiece shape and available working space before comparing jaw shape, joint and handles.

Choose pliers by task

Task Design to look for Check beforehand
Gripping a flat part Flat or parallel gripping surfaces Width, surface sensitivity and required reach
Holding a round part Jaw shape explicitly suitable for the diameter Workpiece diameter and space to open the pliers
Cutting wire or another material Cutting pliers approved by the manufacturer for the material and dimensions Material type, thickness and location of the cut
Gripping inside a recess Slim or extended design Access width, depth and required gripping surface

Example: holding a nut in a narrow recess

Measure the width across flats, depth and narrowest access point. Wide gripping pliers may have enough jaw capacity yet still not fit into the recess. Your measurements may point to a slimmer design; for controlled tightening, a suitable Spanner remains the more appropriate tool type.

Compare handles and joints last

Check that the pliers can fully engage with the workpiece and open within the available space. Insulation or special suitability must be confirmed by the markings on the specific tool. Find more clamping tools under Pliers, clamps & clamping tools.
