Distinguish three cutting methods

Cutting task Tool choice Key limitation
Cutting a solid workpiece to length Compare saws specified for the material and cross-section Blade length, tooth pattern and available working space must all be suitable.
Cutting thin or flexible material Choose a knife or scissors design according to the material, cutting outline and guidance needed A blade for film or fabric is not suitable for solid workpieces simply because of its length.
Machine cutting Consider the machine and cutting accessory as an approved combination Material suitability, disc dimensions, mounting and permitted operating specifications must not be inferred from appearance.

Example: shortening a strip and cutting packaging film

The strip needs cutting to length: its material, cross-section and the straight cutting path determine the suitable saw. The film is a separate task for an appropriate knife or scissors design. Choosing one cutting tool that is simply as large as possible is not a sensible compromise here, because material guidance and cutting objectives differ.
