Compare S1, S1P and S2 by standard edition

Category or combination EN ISO 20345:2011 EN ISO 20345:2022 series of standards
S1 Closed heel area, antistatic properties, energy absorption in the heel area and fuel-resistant outsole. Closed heel area, antistatic properties and energy absorption in the heel area. Outsole fuel resistance is an optional property marked FO.
S1 with additional penetration resistance S1P adds penetration resistance to S1; the insert could be metallic or non-metallic. S1 P identifies S1 with a metallic insert. S1 PL and S1 PS indicate different tests for non-metallic inserts.
S2 As S1, with additional requirements for water penetration and absorption of the upper, then called WRU. As S1, with additional requirements for water penetration and absorption of the upper, now called WPA. FO is not automatically included here either.

For PL, the non-metallic insert is tested with a 4,5-mm test nail; for PS, a 3-mm test nail is used. The test conditions differ, so use the exact marking required. No code promises protection against every sharp object. An older S1P marking also cannot be classified as today's S1 P, S1 PL or S1 PS without knowing the edition of the standard.

S2 does not automatically protect the whole shoe against water

WPA concerns the upper. Water resistance of the complete shoe is a separate requirement, described by WR. S2 already includes the WPA requirement; its symbol does not have to appear separately alongside the category. In contrast, FO is not part of the basic S2 requirements in the 2022 series of standards and must be documented where required. FO describes the outsole, not a fuel barrier for the entire shoe.

Example: water absorption or sharp objects?

Suppose the workplace specification requires S2 and a fuel-resistant outsole. For a model certified under the 2022 series of standards, S2 alone is not enough; evidence of FO is also required. If penetration resistance is required as well, S2 FO alone does not demonstrate this additional property either. Use the complete combination specified. A higher number is not a shortcut to checking every requirement.

Compare the fit of suitable versions

Try both shoes while standing and walking, with your work socks and the insoles approved for the model. If your toes touch the front or your heel slips as you walk, try another size, width or shape. Adding an arbitrary insole can change the tested combination. Advice on Work socks and insoles complements the fitting process.
