Hammers, chisels & axes

Hammers, chisels and axes transfer force in different ways. Decide whether you need to strike a component or tool, work material with a narrow cutting edge, or split wood along the grain. Then compare designs and dimensions.

Task before tool size

Task What to choose Do not confuse
Strike a nail, workpiece or tool approved for striking A hammer selected by the surface being struck, head shape, weight and available space Greater weight does not replace a head shape suited to the surface being struck.
Work material with a point or cutting edge A chisel selected by material, point/cutting-edge shape and intended method of operation Hand-operated and machine-mounted tools use different systems.
Split logs or carry out smaller woodwork tasks A splitting axe, general-purpose axe or hatchet selected for its stated woodwork task Cutting accurately to length remains a sawing task.

Example: shortening a wooden strip and driving a nail

For the nail, compare hammers whose striking face and size suit the accessible space. The strip does not become a task for an axe: if it needs to be cut to a defined length, choose a saw. Two required results therefore call for two tools, even when both jobs are part of the same project.
