Define areas and zones first
Group plants with similar water needs and growing conditions into one zone. Pots in a sunny spot, a shaded bed and a lawn respond differently to weather and soil moisture. If too many outlets are opened at once, pressure and water distribution can drop at the end of the line. Test each planned zone separately, then test only the combinations you intend to run at the same time.
| Function | Suitable when | Check beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Simple timer control | a single defined circuit runs at set times | shortest and longest practical interval |
| Multiple programmes or outlets | zones need separate water supplies | number of independently controllable circuits |
| Sensor connection | rain or soil moisture should influence operation | compatible sensor type and response to failure |
| Manual start or pause | maintenance, testing and weather adjustments are frequently needed | operation directly on the device or via an approved connection |
Check connections and power supply
Note the thread and connection orientation at the water source, the controller's permitted pressure range and the requirements of the downstream system. Battery power, mains power or another power source will determine installation location and maintenance needs. Components used outdoors must be explicitly rated for that use; do not assume an ingress protection rating or frost resistance.
Test and adjust your watering schedule
- Run each zone manually and check water distribution.
- Use collection containers or a soil sample to check how much water actually reaches the area.
- Start with short watering times and adjust them to the weather, soil and plant growth.
- Pause after rain; check that sensor readings make sense through visual inspection.
- Regularly check filters, valves, battery level and leaks.
The German Environment Agency recommends targeted watering at appropriate times; watering too frequently can encourage shallow root growth. Controls should therefore follow a well-founded plan rather than run unchanged every day.
Start by planning your Irrigation systems and accessories, then choose suitable Garden spray guns and lawn sprinklers. For shutdown and frosty periods, see the guide Preparing garden irrigation for winter.
