Choosing waterproof workwear for changeable weather

Brixoro Redaktion |

For changeable weather, what matters is not just whether rain is forecast, but how long you will be outdoors and how much heat you generate while working. Your rain jacket and waterproof trousers need to work together over your other layers. Their names alone do not demonstrate tested rain protection or visibility.

Note four factors before buying

Record the duration of rainfall, wind conditions, work intensity and rest periods. DGUV guidance on weather protection covers both resistance to water penetration and resistance to water vapour. Physically demanding work may therefore require different planning from prolonged standing. DGUV Rule 112-989: Protective clothing.

Jacket, trousers or a complete combination?

Situation Comparison Outcome
Brief shower, upper body exposed Try the jacket on over the mid-layer you will actually wear Sleeves, hem and fastening work properly as you move.
Wet vegetation or work involving kneeling Also check the trousers and how they overlap with the jacket and footwear The selection accounts for the areas affected, not just rain falling from above.
Extended outdoor work Check the documented rain protection and moisture release of the specific version A surface advertised only as water-repellent is not assumed to meet every rain protection requirement.

Example: moving between a vehicle and an outdoor work area

You frequently get in and out, walk briskly outdoors and wait between tasks. A long, heavy outer layer may get in the way inside the vehicle; a short jacket alone may leave a gap when you bend down. Try the jacket and trousers on together, sit down, step up onto a step and reach forwards. The result may be a set of outer layers that is easy to remove, with a dry mid-layer underneath, rather than wearing the thickest possible jacket all the time.

Verify high-visibility performance separately

If you need high-visibility clothing, do not infer its visibility class from a yellow colour or reflective strips. Likewise, a high-visibility jacket does not automatically provide rain protection. The current DGUV guidance treats rain protection and high-visibility performance as separate properties requiring evidence, and explains that the classes of several garments cannot simply be added together. DGUV Information 212-016: High-visibility clothing.

Check the clothing as you will actually wear it: jacket fastened, hood positioned according to the instructions, trousers over or at the intended footwear opening, and high-visibility clothing visible where required. Pockets, straps and backpacks can cover areas or channel water towards gaps between garments.

How garments meet affects everyday work

Look at the neck, wrists, jacket hem and trouser cuffs individually. A hood must be compatible with any required head protection or Hearing protection according to the relevant instructions, and must not restrict vision or movement beyond permitted limits. At the sleeves, check the intended combination with gloves; at the trouser cuffs, check whether the trousers fit over the footwear in the permitted wearing configuration without dragging on the ground.

Also plan for the period after a shower. If you remove wet outer layers in the vehicle, they need somewhere to air without soaking the seat or dry clothing. When the next period of outdoor work begins, do not assume that a jacket still damp inside will be just as comfortable. Having a dry change of clothing or allowing enough drying time can be part of the work plan.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Do not assume waterproofness from a product photo, material name or the appearance of the seams.
  • Do not use a generic washing temperature; follow the model's care label and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Do not wait until it rains to discover that you cannot pull the trousers on over your footwear.
  • Check damaged coatings, seams and fastenings before the next use.

After use, let the garments dry according to their instructions and store them only when dry. Whether and how to renew a water-repellent treatment depends on the material and model. An unsuitable treatment may impair the intended performance or visibility.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Identify exposed body areas and the expected duration of rain.
  2. Consider active work and breaks separately.
  3. Record the required evidence of protection and high-visibility performance.
  4. Try on the jacket, trousers, footwear and other layers together.
  5. Plan care, drying and access to a change of clothing in advance.
