Gloves for heat protection & welding

In hand protection, heat covers several different types of exposure. Touching a hot workpiece is different from exposure to radiant heat or metal splashes. First identify the type of heat, then determine the evidence of protection required.

  • Contact heat means direct contact with a hot surface. A rating for this does not demonstrate protection against radiant heat.
  • Convective heat and radiant heat are tested separately under EN 407. The result of one test cannot replace the other.
  • Small splashes of molten metal and large quantities of molten metal have their own tests. A high contact heat rating alone does not address this hazard.

Selection example

The task changes from handling a heated component to welding with splash exposure. The contact heat rating previously compared is not sufficient for the new task. For welding, choose suitable welding gloves to EN 12477 and account for the assessed exposure; for another heat-related task, use the relevant required test characteristics.

The EN-407 marking consists of separate positions, not an overall score. Test values apply under specified conditions and do not provide a general safe contact time for everyday use. Thickness or leather colour does not establish thermal suitability either. Temperature, type of contact, duration and coverage all form part of a competent assessment of the intended use.
