Plan the line backwards from the watering device
Start at the end of the system: note the flow rate and operating pressure required by the sprinkler or other watering device according to its instructions. If a pump supplies the line, it forms part of the source: compare its performance curve with the planned operating point. Then establish the available flow rate and dynamic pressure at the source under real operating conditions. Only then can you judge whether 1 inch is suitable for the planned route. A larger internal diameter can reduce friction losses over long distances, but it creates neither additional source pressure nor more water.
Planning sheet for 1-inch lines
| Section | Data to record | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Measured filling time to determine flow rate, plus dynamic pressure while water is flowing; for pumps, also the performance curve; connection thread | Does the source provide the flow rate and pressure required by the watering device at the planned operating point? |
| Hose route | Length, rise, tight bends, mobile or fixed use | Where do losses or mechanical stresses occur? |
| Connection points | Hose tail size, thread, coupling profile, seal | Is each side clearly identified? |
| Watering device | Required flow rate and operating pressure according to the instructions | Are both values within the required range at the point of use? |
Test a new system with water first and check all connections both depressurised and during operation. If several areas are supplied, dividing them into zones operated in sequence may be more practical than keeping the whole network open at once. This can only be decided based on actual demand.
Include handling and storage in your plans
Space requirements usually increase with diameter and length. Check the weight and permitted bend radius of the specific hose, the load capacity of the storage equipment and the route through gates or around beds. Route the hose smoothly to avoid kinks, being driven over and strain on the couplings. Before freezing conditions arrive, follow the draining and storage instructions for the relevant model.
For smaller sizes and other designs, browse the Garden hose range. Find suitable connections under Hose connectors and couplings; the guide Garden hose diameters and connections helps with preparation.
