What the type designation tells you
| Designation | Limited scope | What it means for selection |
|---|---|---|
| Type 5, EN ISO 13982-1 | Full-body protection against airborne solid particles | Do not infer approval for liquids from this type designation. |
| Type 6, EN 13034 | Limited protective performance against liquid chemicals | Do not select it as a substitute for another suit type required for greater exposure. |
| Type 3 or 4, EN 14605 | Liquid-tight or spray-tight construction and connections, respectively | Determine the required type from the specific exposure; chemical compatibility must also be checked. |
Putting this into practice
Example: instead of collecting dry dust, the same workplace is now to be treated with a chemical cleaner. A suit documented only for particles does not thereby become a suitable liquid barrier. The cleaner, concentration and type of contact must be considered when choosing for the new procedure. A similar-looking suit is only an alternative if its documentation covers this task.
Type numbers are not a universal ranking for every hazard. Even a suitable type does not confirm resistance to every substance or exposure duration. The interfaces between the suit, gloves, footwear and any other protection must suit the intended use. For work involving heat, follow the separate welding protection selection guidance.
