Welding protection & equipment

Welding protection is selected according to the process, material and working position. Protection for the eyes, hands and body works together. Start here with personal equipment; find machines and tools under Welding and soldering.

Complete each area of protection

Protection area Decision Choosing the right equipment
Eyes and face The filter and shade level must match the welding process and, for arc welding, the current. A clear protective lens without a suitable welding filter is not suitable for viewing the arc.
Hands and forearms The glove must suit the thermal exposure and required finger mobility. Compare Welding gloves by application; standard Assembly gloves are not automatically an alternative.
Body and gaps between garments Plan suitable welding protective clothing and coverage of the neck, wrists and footwear openings. Choose the jacket and additional garments according to the working position, not just fabric thickness.

Putting this into practice

Example: a seam previously welded at a bench now needs to be welded overhead. Having a protective jacket does not mean the equipment requirements remain the same: the head, neck and openings where hot particles could enter must be considered. Additional coverage depends on the specific position; the eye filter still depends on the process.

EN ISO 11611 covers protective clothing for welding and related processes. A corresponding garment marking replaces neither the correct selection of other PPE nor measures against welding fumes. Extraction, the working environment and protection of other people are defined in the workplace protection plan.
