How to narrow down your options
- Establish the requirements: First, check whether safety footwear or occupational footwear is required and which additional requirements apply. Then compare the styles within that selection.
- Describe the working environment: Note dry indoor areas, outdoor paths, exposure to moisture and typical floor surfaces. This lets you look for specific stated properties instead of automatically choosing the highest class number.
- Check the fit with your other equipment: Measure both feet according to the manufacturer's instructions and allow for work socks and, where applicable, approved insoles.
- Consider your movements: Prolonged standing, climbing stairs and frequent kneeling place different demands on the fit. Pay attention to where the upper and fastening touch your foot and leg as you move.
Distinguish footwear style from protective function
| Option | When should you take a closer look? | Key comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Safety footwear | When footwear with the appropriate markings is required | The S marking identifies safety footwear; additional properties and the specific class remain essential. |
| Occupational footwear | When occupational footwear meets the requirements | Occupational footwear marked O is not required to have a tested protective toe cap. |
| Low-cut footwear or a higher upper | When comparing freedom of movement and contact with the upper | Upper height is a design feature and does not replace protective markings. |
| Insoles and socks | When checking the fit of your everyday combination | Include the extra space needed and the permitted footwear and insole combination in your comparison. |
Frequently asked questions before buying
Is S3 automatically the right choice for every job?
No. A protection class is not a general quality ranking. Start with the function you need, then compare the appropriate class and additional markings. The S3 selection guide explores this category in more detail.
Can I compensate for insufficient width by choosing a larger size?
A larger size also changes the length and the position of your foot inside the shoe. First, compare the available fit and size chart. Note whether the tightness is around the toes, instep or heel.
Can any insole be used?
For marked protective footwear, the permitted combination is what matters. If you need insoles, look specifically for the relevant manufacturer information instead of comparing sole length alone.

Care for wet work footwear gently
Cleaning, drying and care products depend on the material and the manufacturer's instructions. Our guide to drying and caring for wet work footwear describes a controlled process that avoids strong direct heat and ends with a condition check.
