Test the layout on the ground first
Mark out the desired line using string for straight sections or a flexible hose for curves. Check it from several viewpoints and walk the route you will later use for mowing or maintenance. Then measure along the actual line, rather than just the straight distance between the start and end. Corners, curves and joins may require additional material.
| Criterion | Question before choosing | Effect on planning |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Straight line, broad curve, tight radius or corner? | Consider flexible and rigid versions separately; check the minimum permitted radius |
| Height | Is the aim simply a visual boundary, or should it also restrict root growth and material movement? | Determine the installation depth and visible top edge |
| Ground conditions | Loose, stony, compacted or next to a paved area? | Determine suitable anchoring and the work involved |
| Maintenance | How close should a mower or edge trimmer be able to get? | Plan the top edge and clearance to avoid dangerous collisions |
Calculate quantities without running short
- Record the total length of each section.
- Subtract the width of gates or deliberately open gaps.
- Add overlaps, corner pieces and connectors according to the system specifications.
- Calculate the number of fixings based on the layout and the manufacturer's spacing requirements.
- Allow a small, justified reserve for cutting and connections.
Check for utility lines and roots in the work area before installation. An even top edge looks neat and avoids trip hazards. Where the edging meets paths, it must not block drainage. Expansion, corrosion or brittleness cannot be assessed generically across materials; refer to the specifications for the particular version.
