Distinguishing inserts in the 2022 classification
- S5 under EN ISO 20345:2022 adds a cleated outsole and penetration resistance with a type P metallic insert to S4.
- S5L uses a type PL non-metallic insert; S5S uses a type PS non-metallic insert. The tests differ; the suffixes are not comfort levels.
- For S5 under EN ISO 20345:2011, the new rule that S5 means a metallic insert must not be applied retrospectively. The specific insert information must also be checked.
Selection example
The workplace requirement explicitly calls for a metallic insert. An S5L boot marked under the 2022 classification is not an equivalent choice for this requirement. Among suitable versions, then compare heel grip, toe room and the boot shaft with the socks and legwear you intend to use.
A moulded boot for wet conditions is not automatically a chemical protection boot. The footwear category does not prevent liquid from entering over the top. Antistatic properties also do not mean electrical insulation. The boot must fit securely during the intended movements; a longer shoe size does not replace the correct width.
