Hearing protection

For hearing protection, the highest attenuation rating is not automatically the best choice. You need attenuation suited to the assessed noise exposure, in a form you can wear correctly throughout that exposure. Compare design, handling and compatibility with glasses or a helmet.

Narrow down the design according to your work routine

Work routine Options to compare What matters
Frequent movement between quiet and noisy areas Earmuffs or suitable banded earplugs Putting them on and taking them off outside the noise exposure area must be practical.
Long uninterrupted periods of noise or heavy sweating under earmuffs Suitable earplugs The right size and correct insertion are essential for a proper fit.
A helmet is also required A documented helmet and earmuff combination or suitable earplugs An adapter that physically fits does not by itself confirm suitability for combined use.

Putting this into practice

Example: You repeatedly move from a quiet preparation room to a noisy workstation. Appropriately selected earmuffs can make these frequent changes easier. However, if the glasses worn at the same time create a gap beneath the sealing cushion, that combination is unsuitable; check another suitable combination or earplugs. This is not an instruction to remove protection while exposed to noise.

SNR summarises attenuation as a single-number rating; H, M and L refer to different frequency ranges. Subtracting SNR from an arbitrary dB(A) measurement is not a reliable selection calculation. Professional selection takes account of the measurement method and the attenuation achievable in practice. Warning signals must remain recognisable; two attenuation ratings must not simply be added together when protection is combined.
