Distinguishing the tap thread from the hose connection

The female thread attaches to the water tap. The other side accepts the hose’s plug-in coupling. The ¾-inch specification therefore describes the threaded connection and does not define the hose diameter.

Fitting the brass tap connector

Clean the sealing surfaces and thread, position the connector straight and screw it on by hand. Then attach the matching hose coupling and check both connection points for leaks with the tap open.

Seal and winter storage

Check the existing seal for damage before connecting. Before frost, shut off the water supply and drain the connector and hose completely. If in doubt, remove the tap connector and store it in a frost-free place.

How can I identify a ¾-inch tap thread?

A ¾-inch pipe thread has an outside diameter of approximately 26.4 mm. The inch designation is a nominal size; here, ¾ inch does not equal a measured thread diameter of 19 mm.

Can I push the garden hose directly onto the tap connector?

That is not what this connection is designed for. The hose requires a matching plug-in coupling that locks onto the tap connector’s plug-in nipple.

Does the tap thread also determine my hose size?

No. The ¾-inch specification concerns the thread on the tap. The hose coupling must match both the plug-in system and your hose diameter.

What should I check if the connection leaks?

First shut off the water supply. Check the thread, sealing surfaces and seal for dirt, cross-threading or damage. Tightening it further cannot replace a suitable, intact seal.
