Winter work gloves: choosing the right pair for the task

Winter work gloves must suit your hand size, your tasks and the conditions you come into contact with. Consider warmth and finger dexterity together. Check moisture exposure and any specific protection requirements separately; a lining alone does not address these factors.

Start by describing the work

Make a note of what you actually do with your hands. Assembling small components, carrying larger objects and tidying the garden place different demands on grip and dexterity. Include whether the work stays dry, whether you touch wet surfaces and how long you wear the gloves.

This description is more useful than searching for the “warmest” model. A pair may feel comfortable to wear yet still be unsuitable for contact with a particular surface or substance. Where workplace protection is required, select gloves whose documented properties meet the requirements identified in the risk assessment. DGUV: Selecting protective clothing and protective gloves.

Compare four features separately

Feature Specific question Not enough on its own
Fit Do the palm and fingertips fit properly? Simply choosing the same size as another model
Lining and construction How does the design feel when you handle objects? A generic “winter” label
Coating Which areas are coated? The material name alone
Documented performance Which properties are specified for the model? Colour, thickness or a product photo

Check the size with simple movements

Close your hand, stretch out your fingers and touch your fingertips with your thumb. Check whether the material feels tight or extends noticeably beyond your fingertips. Then use a harmless object to check whether you can pick it up securely and put it down again. This trial is intended to check handling, not to replace a protection test.

If you want to wear glove liners, take the combination into account when choosing your size. An extra layer can change the fit. Check the manufacturer's guidance on intended use and avoid combinations that unnecessarily restrict hand movement.

Warmth and moisture are separate considerations

Look at where the coating ends: at the palm, the back of the hand or the cuff. A coated palm does not automatically mean the entire glove has a continuous coating. Compare the stated intended use and the specified performance properties.

Cold protection markings also need to be read in detail. For example, uvex specifies EN 511 with the sequence 0 1 0 for a particular thermal model. This example shows that a reference to a standard comes with additional values specific to the model. It is neither applied to other models here nor used as a recommendation for a particular temperature. Manufacturer example with a specific EN-511 rating.

Choose differently for fine assembly work and tidying up

When handling small parts, it is particularly useful to compare finger fit and material thickness. When carrying larger objects, check the grip design and coverage. Garden work also involves a variety of surfaces. Do not automatically choose the same design for every task if the requirements differ significantly.

Suitability for contact with cleaning products or other substances must be checked separately. Latex, nitrile or any other material name does not indicate universal chemical resistance. Likewise, a winter design says nothing about suitability for use around machinery with an entanglement hazard; follow the relevant work instructions.

Review and store your gloves after use

Follow the care and drying instructions for the model. Check for visible damage and wear before the next use. Have a suitable spare pair ready if your working conditions regularly leave your gloves damp or dirty. This keeps your choice focused on your work routine rather than a generic seasonal label.
