Tarpaulins, Garden fleece & Fabric

Tarpaulins, garden fleece and woven fabrics serve different purposes: covering, protecting plants, separating surfaces or securing materials. Choose by function and permeability first, then calculate the area, extra coverage and fixings required.

Narrow down the material by task

Task Important property Practical check
Protecting plants from brief cold spells Light, air and water permeability, plus the intended temperature range Lay fleece loosely, allow room for growth and plan timely ventilation or removal
Covering objects or loose materials Suitable weather protection, tear resistance and secure eyelets or edges Allow water to run off rather than collect in hollows
Separating soil layers or surfaces Water drainage, load capacity and suitability for ground contact Prepare the ground and plan overlaps to suit the application
Privacy screen, windbreak or support for climbing plants Openness of the weave, wind load and fixing points Check the supporting structure and distances from the edges

These functions are not interchangeable. Lightweight plant fleece is not a heavy-duty tarpaulin; an impermeable tarpaulin placed over plants can trap heat and prevent air circulation. Always follow the stated use and care instructions for the individual product.

Calculate the area with allowances

For a flat cover, length multiplied by width is only sufficient if there is no height to span. For a bed, add twice the expected plant height and twice the required fixing margin to the bed width. Apply the same calculation to the length. The Bavarian Garden Academy recommends laying fleece loosely and allowing room for growth and edge fixings.

Make the material last longer

  • Remove sharp edges from the underlying surface
  • Avoid stretching the material unnecessarily tightly over plants or corners
  • Check fixings after storms, heavy rain and temperature changes
  • Ventilate fleece as temperatures rise or remove it according to the growing instructions
  • Store clean, dry and protected from mechanical damage
  • Collect all offcuts and damaged plastic pieces and dispose of them correctly
