Fixings for gardening & irrigation

Fixings for gardens and irrigation hold hoses, pipes, covers or accessories in their intended position. Choosing the right fixing starts with the component being held and the supporting surface; only then should you decide on the type and number of fixings.

What movement should remain possible?

A movable hose guide needs clearance, while a rigid pipe needs support without being crushed. Covers and fleece must be secured against wind while remaining accessible for maintenance. Establish whether the fixing needs to support, guide, tension, prevent lifting or seal a connection. A hose clamp on a hose tail serves a different purpose from a wall or ground support.

Task What to measure What to consider when choosing
Guide a hose or pipe External diameter and route Do not constrict the component; allow for bend radius and movement
Secure a hose or pipe to a surface Supporting surface, distance from edges and fixing points The mounting method must be approved for soil, wood, masonry or the relevant material
Secure fleece or fabric Area, overlap and edges exposed to wind Allow sufficient material at the edges and access points that are easy to open for maintenance
Secure a hose to a hose tail External diameter when fitted and permitted clamping range Use a suitable hose clamp and attachment method as specified

Determine spacing from the hose or pipe route

Mark changes of direction, valves and fittings, and transitions first. Weight, operation or pulling create particular loads at these points. Between them, spacing depends on the stiffness, weight, thermal movement and installation instructions of the component being supported. There is therefore no universal fixing spacing for all hoses and pipes.

Installation checklist

  • Check the supporting surface for concealed services and sufficient load-bearing capacity
  • Choose materials and fixings suitable for outdoor use
  • Route hoses and pipes without kinks, abrasion points or unnecessary tension
  • Keep valves, filters, couplings and drain points accessible
  • After first use, check whether components have settled or shifted
