Knee protection & knee pads

For kneeling work, there is a difference between separate knee pads and inserts for purpose-designed trouser pockets. Compare attachment methods, dimensions and intended-use information instead of choosing solely by padding thickness.

How to narrow down your choice

  1. Describe the surface: Plan for the actual kneeling task and the uneven surfaces involved. Soft padding does not automatically provide tested protection against sharp objects.
  2. Choose the attachment method: Decide whether knee protection should be worn independently of your trousers or inserted into purpose-designed knee pockets.
  3. Check system compatibility: For insert pads, what matters is either an explicitly tested combination or a specified interoperable solution. Matching external dimensions are not enough.
  4. Compare the fit in your working position: The pad must cover the intended area when kneeling. Check the adjustment options and whether the knee pocket is undamaged and can be closed.

Attachment methods compared

Option When to consider it Key comparison
Knee protection attached to the leg When it needs to be worn independently of specific trousers Compare attachment and fit when switching between walking and kneeling.
Insert pads When suitable trousers with knee pockets are available Check pad and pocket markings together; system approval comes before external dimensions.
Kneeling mat for the workplace When the intended solution is to remain at the work location Compare the surface area and range of movement; a mat does not automatically move with you.

Common questions before buying

Can I cut an oversized pad to fit?

Do not rely on pocket dimensions alone. Alterations can affect the shape and intended function; adjustments should only be made following explicit instructions. Otherwise, choose the specified size or combination.

Is a particularly soft pad automatically better?

Softness does not tell you whether the required performance level is met. Compare the surface and application first, then fit and handling. A comfortable feel is not proof of a particular level of protection.

Do I need to remove the pad before washing?

Follow the care instructions for both the pad and the trousers. Plan care for both parts; permission to wash the trousers does not automatically apply to knee protection inserted inside them.
