Distinguishing S7, S7L and S7S
| Category | Base requirements and addition | Penetration-resistant insert |
|---|---|---|
| S7 | As S3, with additional whole-shoe water resistance | Type P metallic insert |
| S7L | As S3L, with additional whole-shoe water resistance | Type PL non-metallic insert; tested with a 4,5-mm nail |
| S7S | As S3S, with additional whole-shoe water resistance | Type PS non-metallic insert; tested with a 3-mm nail |
Putting this into practice
Example: the workplace requirement calls for whole-shoe water resistance alongside the necessary safety features. A WPA marking for the upper alone is not sufficient. Choose documented whole-shoe water resistance, then the required insert type. If the protection plan requires a metallic insert, an S7L model is not an equivalent choice despite its protection against wet conditions.
WPA concerns water penetration and absorption of the upper; WR concerns the water resistance of the whole shoe under test conditions. This does not mean unlimited use underwater or chemical protection. The suffixes L and S distinguish insert types and tests, not comfort levels. Try suitable models with the socks you use: toe room and heel grip must both be right; a larger size does not automatically solve a width problem.
