Restraint and fall arrest have different requirements
| Task | Key difference | What this means for selection |
|---|---|---|
| Restraint | The accessible range of movement ends before every relevant fall edge. | The planned connection must prevent access to the edge, including along the intended work routes. |
| Fall arrest | A free fall is possible; the system must arrest it and requires clearance. | Have the harness, connection, anchor point and required clearance designed as a complete system. |
| Adding to an existing component | A carabiner that fits does not establish system compatibility on its own. | Choose only an addition documented as suitable for use together. |
Putting this into practice
Example: A maintenance point can be reached with the planned restraint system without reaching the roof edge. A longer lanyard would also allow access to the edge. It is therefore not an equivalent comfort option, but changes the protection required. If the range of movement is insufficient, the system design must be reviewed.
A work positioning belt is not a fall arrest harness. For a fall arrest system, the clearance required by the manufacturer and a feasible rescue procedure must be established. Selection and use require competent planning and instruction with practical exercises; comparing categories does not replace these.
