Three clearance checks around the fastener
- Above the fastener: The ratchet head and socket must fit together within the available space.
- Around the handle: Check whether the handle length allows it to move within the intended working area.
- On the return stroke: Compare the documented return angle with the available swing arc. Manufacturers may use fine teeth, for example, to reduce the required return angle.
Example: a nut beneath a cover
The socket fits the nut, but the assembly is too tall once the ratchet head is added. A longer handle does not solve this clearance problem. First compare a suitable lower-profile design or another documented means of access. Only once the combination can reach the nut does it make sense to compare swing arc, reversing mechanism and handle.
A set is worthwhile for several known fasteners if it actually includes the sockets you need. For a single access problem, the right individual tool may be enough. Other options: Screwdriving tools and Spanners.
