The substrate, starting condition and desired finish together determine which sanding or polishing stage you need. A flat solid surface material requiring a matt finish needs a different final step from the same surface with a high-gloss target. Adhesive residue, raised edges or deep marks also mean starting earlier in the process than you would on an already even surface.

Solid surface example: the target finish determines the choice

The Festool application example for a satin solid surface finish distinguishes coarse sanding of raised areas from fine sanding through to the target finish.

Do not apply this sequence to paint, wood, metal or stone. For another substrate, establish the starting point, processing stages and permitted combination from its manufacturer's specifications. Then check the machine, fitting, sanding or polishing backing pad and consumables as a complete setup.
