Start with the result you need rather than choosing between analogue and digital. Reading a short length directly, transferring a measurement to a workpiece and measuring a longer distance require different approaches.

What result do you need?

Measuring task What to compare When to rule it out
Short measurement directly on the workpiece Scale divisions, contact surface and accessible measuring range of a manual tool If the reference edge cannot be reached, a finer scale will not solve the problem.
Repeatedly transferring a measurement or angle Stop, arm or gauge shape, and secure contact A distance display alone cannot replace a required physical reference on the workpiece.
Measuring a longer distance or checking alignment Digital or laser-based device according to its documented measuring range, target conditions and readability A high maximum range is useless if the starting point, target point or display cannot be used at the work site.

Example: measuring a shelving recess

To measure the clear width, you need a tool that fits between both boundaries or is documented as capable of measuring that distance. If the measurement then needs to be transferred to several strips, a manual reference that is easy to position is also helpful. A digital display alone does not perform this transfer.

Always compare documented accuracy for the specific model and intended measuring conditions; the device type does not imply a universal accuracy value.
