When 1/2 inch makes sense for your plans
Start by planning the actual route from the tap to the furthest watering point. Measure along the route and add only a small allowance for movement. Unnecessary length adds weight and friction losses; insufficient length puts strain on the tap, couplings and plants. When watering individual beds or containers, easy handling is also often more important than having the largest possible hose.
Hose diameter alone does not predict a fixed flow rate in litres. Flow rate and pressure at the end also depend on hose length, water pressure, elevation differences, fittings, couplings and the spray gun. A practical preliminary test: fill a bucket of known capacity directly from the water source and time it. Then repeat the same test using the planned hose route and watering device. This shows what actually reaches the point of use.
Check the whole connection chain, not just the inch size
| Check | What to note | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hose | 1/2 inch or 12,5 mm and the required length | Determines the shortlist and suitable hose tail |
| Water source | Tap thread, female or male | The thread is not automatically also 1/2 inch |
| Coupling | System profile and connection type | The same hose size does not guarantee a matching coupling side |
| Watering device | Connection, required operating pressure and flow rate according to the instructions | A spray gun or sprinkler may limit the options |
Short selection checklist
- Sketch the hose route, including bends and elevation differences.
- Test the water source and watering device during operation.
- Note all threads, hose tails and coupling profiles separately.
- Check whether the existing trolley or holder is suitable for the length and specific hose model.
- Follow the selected item's operating, temperature and drinking water guidance.
