Files & planing tools

Start with the material, type of work and access. For files, the cross-section determines which surface, edge, opening or contour can be reached. A planing tool is only an option if its specific design and the manufacturer's specifications cover the material and the intended guided operation.

Choose the tool shape to suit the area being worked

Starting point Decision Result
Flat surface or straight edge Check the material, intended method of material removal and accessible width against the specified file or plane design Both tool groups remain options until the specific design narrows down suitability for the task.
Curve, hole or internal contour Match the file cross-section and dimensions to the geometry that can be reached Designs that make contact only at isolated points or not at all are excluded.
Guided cut across a surface or edge Consider only a planing tool whose manufacturer specifies the material and that exact operation The name plane does not replace approval for the material or task.

Example: a burr in a small recess

Measure the width, depth and contour. Do not choose a tool group solely by the size of the area: you need a version explicitly intended for the material, with a working shape that reaches the contour. PFERD presents needle files with various profiles for small surfaces, cut-outs, shapes and radii. For work across larger surfaces, see Sanding & polishing supplies.
