Chisels

Will the chisel be used by hand or with a machine? Clarify this before comparing length, point and cutting edge. For machine chisels, the exact fitting is part of the selection process; a similar shank shape does not confirm compatibility.

Match the working shape to the available access

  • A point or narrow area: Compare the point or cutting-edge shape intended for the material and task.
  • A wider working area: Check a wider design specified for the task and the clearance it requires.
  • A recessed area: Compare usable tool length and access together. Extra length is no substitute for a cutting edge suited to the task.

Example: a narrow area beside an edge

Measure the available width and the depth of the working area. A wide cutting edge that cannot be positioned there is unsuitable. Among the designs that can reach the area, compare material suitability and operating method. Even a chisel with the right fitting is unsuitable if the existing machine does not have a chiselling mode approved for it.

The Bosch overview of chisel shapes explains the differences between pointed, flat, tile and other chisels for different tasks. Specific approvals remain tied to the tool and machine. Related categories: Hammers, chisels and axes and Impact and chiselling tools.
