Distinguish between three installation situations
| Situation | Key check | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor water outlet on a building | Drinking water protection, frost protection plan, accessibility and professional installation | Work on drinking water installations must be carried out by an authorised specialist company |
| Rainwater tank | Actual tank thread, seal, outlet height and support | Tank connections are not universal based on inch size alone |
| Irrigation line | Inlet and outlet, flow direction, operating pressure and operating space | The specific item's approval determines the permitted installation and medium |
Record threads correctly
Record the following separately at the inlet and outlet: female or male thread, full thread designation, existing sealing surface and available space. A measured external diameter does not directly correspond to the nominal size of an inch thread. For connections to a hose or quick-release coupling, add the hose tail size or system profile.
Plan for operation and safety
- The handle must remain accessible in every position and must not hit a wall or tank.
- The weight of the connected hose must not place an excessive load on the outlet; support the line separately if necessary.
- For outdoor fittings, provide frost protection and drainage appropriate to the design.
- For drinking water connections, have the required backflow protection assessed professionally.
- Take medium, temperature and pressure limits only from the specific product and system approvals.
The DVGW explains protection for outdoor water outlets: even a standard outdoor outlet needs a suitable protective device; more demanding applications require a separate assessment by a specialist company. “Fits the thread” is therefore not enough to establish suitability for a drinking water installation.
Find adapters and connectors under Irrigation fittings and connections. For an existing tank, go directly to IBC accessories and connections.
