Welding jackets

A welding jacket must fasten over your intended underlayers and cover the required areas while you work. Compare shoulder movement and sleeve length together with trousers and gloves. Confirm suitability for the welding task before considering pocket count or fabric feel.

Compare the fastened jacket during work movements

  • When you reach forwards, the cut must not pull so tightly that you would need to open the front fastening. More room at the shoulders can be more important than extra width around the waist.
  • At the wrist and waistband, coverage must be assessed together with gloves and trousers. A sleeve that fits on its own may leave a gap when reaching in this combination.
  • Overhead work may require additional suitable coverage for the head and neck. A longer jacket does not address this separate protection requirement.

Selection example

You can only reach the planned weld with your arms stretched well forwards. With the jacket fastened, this pulls strongly at the shoulders and exposes the area between sleeves and gloves. Compare a suitable alternative cut or size with the same gloves. Wearing the jacket open or pushing up the sleeves does not solve the lack of freedom of movement.

Welding protective clothing to EN ISO 11611 is selected according to the defined task and worn fully fastened up to the neck. Additional PPE depends on the process and working position. Clothing contaminated with oil or other flammable substances is not suitable for starting welding work.
