High-visibility vests

A high-visibility vest is an additional outer garment. What matters is whether it fits fastened over the clothes you actually wear and whether its high-visibility areas remain visible. Choose the size with your summer or winter layers in mind, rather than relying solely on your usual T-shirt size.

Check room for layers and everyday use together

Wearing situation What to compare When to rule it out
Over a thin top Fit when fastened and moving your arms A vest that hangs well away from the body or gets in the way is not a suitable fit.
Over a winter jacket Girth and fastening over all intended layers If it only fits when open, it is too small for this combination.
With a backpack or back-mounted equipment Obstruction of high-visibility areas Do not assume that wearing the vest beneath the equipment leaves its visibility unchanged.

Putting this into practice

Example: a vest kept in your vehicle fastens over a summer shirt but not over a winter jacket. It is therefore unsuitable for use with the winter jacket. Compare a suitable larger size or different cut, and test the fit when getting out of the vehicle and reaching.

Wearing the vest fastened is part of its intended function. Its marking must meet the required high-visibility class; the sleeves of an ordinary jacket worn underneath do not increase the vest's class. If more visible areas are required, plan the complete combination.
