Manual measuring tools

Choose a measuring tool according to what you actually need to measure: length, external dimension, internal dimension, depth, angle or alignment. A long measuring range is no help if the measuring faces cannot reach the point.

Distinguish between measuring tasks

Task Suitable tool family Check first
Long distance Tape measure or folding rule Measuring range, contact point and whether there is straight-line access along the distance
External, internal or depth measurement Caliper with the appropriate measuring faces or depth rod Measuring range, jaw shape and accessibility of the measuring point
Angle or alignment Square or spirit level Contact surface, length and ease of reading

Example: groove width and depth

A single external measurement is not enough. For the width, you need internal measuring faces that can reach into the groove; for the depth, a suitable depth rod or depth gauge. Note both values and the access width before choosing the measuring range.
