Start with the plants' needs, then choose the equipment
First group the areas to be watered: containers, beds, hedges and lawns may need different amounts of water and application methods. Location, soil, weather and growth stage also affect demand. Targeted watering directly around the roots can limit water losses; watering across a whole area serves different purposes. The actual running time can only be determined from measured water application and the soil's response.
| Stage | Question | Result for the shopping list |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Source | Rainwater or drinking water, which connection and how much water during operation? | Suitable water outlet, backflow protection and a pump if required |
| 2. Treatment | Does the system need filtration or pressure adjustment? | Only explicitly compatible components |
| 3. Distribution | Which areas will operate together? | Zones, valves and branches |
| 4. Supply line | What length, elevation and number of outlets? | Suitable pipe or hose size based on calculations or instructions |
| 5. Outlet | At individual points, along a row or across an area? | Watering devices suited to the irrigation task |
| 6. Controls | Manual, timed or sensor-controlled? | Operation and maintenance plan |
Start with one zone as a trial
- Measure the source flow during operation using a bucket and stopwatch.
- Draw a small zone of related planting areas on paper.
- Note line lengths, differences in elevation and all connection points.
- Assemble the zone, flush it and check for leaks.
- Collect and compare the water delivered at several points.
- Add further zones only after a successful test.
Drinking water connections are subject to backflow protection requirements; the DVGW describes a separate assessment of the backflow prevention device by a specialist company for more demanding garden applications. Rainwater can be a sensible choice for garden plants if its source and the system are suitable. The two sources must not be connected without appropriate professional separation.
For fixed routes, see the planning guidance under Irrigation pipe; for timer programmes, see Irrigation controls. Outlets for watering areas are available under Garden spray guns and lawn sprinklers. The guide Preparing garden irrigation for winter helps with seasonal shutdown.
